Not above a little horn-blowing now and again (ya think?), Nintendo just released some internal tracking numbers that indicate Wii Sports Resort has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide.

Not a singular game but a collection of several little games on one disc, Wii Sports Resort comes bundled with the new Wii MotionPlus accessory, a snap-on dongle that enhances the motion sensing sensibilities of the Wii Remote Controller (Wii-mote).

The bundle launched in late June in Japan, late July in the North America and Europe, and has since sold a million copies in each region, according to Nintendo.

Nintendo asserts, quite realistically, that the collection of 12 resort-themed sports activities is on its way to becoming another Nintendo "long-tail" title, i.e., a game that sells steadily over an extended period of time, as opposed to a singular flurry of sales in and around a title's initial release. Wii Play and Wii Fit are also considered "long-tail" titles.

It can be argued, of course, that the phenomenal sales of Wii Sport Resort have as much to do with the MotionPlus peripheral as much as the game itself, another decidedly-accessible title for gamers of any stripe, age, gender and skill level that might be worth $30 if purchase separately, which currently can not be done.

MotionPlus is available for purchase separately and is considered by many to be an essential upgrade for Wii, allowing for the precision motion control that the Wii-mote alone promised but failed to deliver in the first place.

Nintendo estimates that the stand-alone Wii MotionPlus accessory, available for $19.99 USD, has sold another 1 million units by itself in the US alone (no worldwide estimates were revealed). Again, a very plausible sales figure considering the Wii's propensity for delivering wholesome living room game shenanigans with 2 to 4 players. Wii Sports Resort contains but one dongle, though most of the mini-games therein accommodate two players.
